What is it like to be a call centre agent?

Well..let me enlighten you how it is; from a call centre agent’s vantage point.My shift starts at 12noon and I have to wake up 9:30 am to get myself ready. Eating my breakfast will take me 10-15 minutes, taking a shower is 30 -45 minutes, getting dress is another 30 minutes. When the clock stroked 10:45am I must hit the road all else I’ll be caught up in the mid morning traffic jam. I will spend 45 minutes to an hour travelling, if I have my own car it will only be 20 minutes, on the road. Most of time it is a good experience; yes most because there are times that I have to deal with nasty co-passengers and I have to face such consequences because I’m in a public utility jeep. Sometimes travelling can be boring or even irritating simply because some drivers will stop in the unloading and loading area longer than necessary. If  im lucky I’ll arrive at work with 30 minutes to spare before my shift starts at 12 noon, enough time to get my headset from the baggage counter,  run to my computer station and pull up my tools. Actually it takes 15-20 minutes to set up all my tools and I spend the remaining minutes, approximately 10-15 minutes, chatting with my workmates and when the clock strikes 12:00 (no, we don’t transformed into rag laden lass) you will hear….”LOG IN guys!!!” by my supervisor shouting across the sea of workstations that fill the room.
I unmindfully put my headset on while keep chatting with my workmate. I load up my TVOIP, punched my Avaya ID and click AUTO IN.

Usually I spend my break time filling out trackers like call back trackers, auxiliary work trackers, and escalation forms and without noticing my fifteen minutes break is up. Once again, back to taking in calls. I have to endure another two hours phone time- calls keep pouring in. I still have one fifteen minutes break until my shift is over.  At long last it’s nine o’clock pm time to go home but not before I log out from my tools, log off my pc, tidy up my station and return my headsets to the baggage counter. Without dillydallying I head out of the building into the darkness with my workmates whom just like me are eager to go home. We’re busy talking and laughing reviewing the day’s event while waiting for the first passenger jeep. I have to spend thirty agonizing minutes on the road before I reach home.

That is what a day in a call centre is and you might find it boring- I agree but despite of it all I can say that it is satisfying. I was able to pacify an irate customer, resolved lots of issue’s and had a nice, fun conversation with at least one of my customers.

I admit, I’m always thinking of quitting my job every day of my life but here I am still working in a call centre.
