What is Franklin Electornic Bible?

In today’s technologically advanced world, more and more people are also slowly getting digital in their spiritual lives by using a Franklin Electronic Bible.

With the way science and technology was being adapted in most of the things that we did, it wasn’t long before it caught up to our spiritual lives as well.

There are many digital bibles available in the market today and the Franklin Electronic Bible is just one of them. These bibles are especially geared towards young adults that love the convenience of technology, but at the same time want to get in touch with their faith.

Franklin has been a company that creates and develops materials for learning through the use of handheld devices, media cards or through the net.

They not only create digital versions of the Bible, but they also provide clients with various learning tools, specifically dictionaries, encyclopedias and other education materials.

Their handheld machines are manufactured and distributed all over the world and help different kinds of people in learning new things each day.

One of the biggest markets for the company is currently Asia, particularly Japan. They just released an English pocket dictionary that will allow people to look up the English words that they have trouble understanding.

These are effective learning tools and more are currently in development by the company to cater to the ever growing demand.

As you can see, there is a big market for digital devices since more people each day are turning to them instead of traditional means. Thus, it is not a surprise to have people prefer to walk around with digital bibles instead of the traditional book.

Different Versions of Franklin Electonic bibles

One of my favorite snippets of wisdom found in William Least Heat-Moon’s Blue Highways: A Journey into America (including the first line: Beware thoughts that come in the night.) is contained in an exchange Heat-Moon had with a man he met in Tennessee. The man asked him, “Where you headed from here?” Heat-Moon replied, “I don’t know.” Grinning, the man said, “Cain’t get lost then.”

There’s something truly liberating about not knowing where you’re going. We rarely have this freedom in our daily lives. We have to plan the next project for work, or whose turn it is to bring the kids to school, or what we need to pick up at the grocery store for dinner. So when we have the chance to actually let go and float with the current, we should take it. For writers of children’s fiction, it’s essential to embrace the unplotted course.

I can’t count how many manuscripts I’ve read where it’s very clear that the writers began with the ending. They knew where they wanted to end up; the lesson they wanted to teach, or the message they needed to convey. Then they worked backwards, manipulating their characters and plots to arrive at preconceived destinations. This always — always! — results in manuscripts that are heavy-handed, contrived, and often don’t make sense.

Rather, I suggest to these writers that they start with their protagonist, and brainstorm from there. Ask “What if?” What if this character reacted to the problem differently. What if another character worked against him. What if you swapped some character traits, from confident to shy, from bookish to musically gifted, from being a football player to a skateboarder. Where might you end up?

Some authors can’t let go of their ending. It’s too scary, not knowing where they’re headed. They need assurance that their work will have a purpose before they invest the time and effort to write it. What if they try a new direction and it doesn’t pan out? Then they’ll have to start all over again. Or (and this is really scary for some authors), what if they embrace a new direction, and the whole meaning of their book changes? Instead of teaching kids that everyone should be valued for their special talents, their book might evolve into a story about not taking life too seriously. And that’s not the message they want kids to hear.

Sadly, these writers likely won’t get published. To them, the theme is more important than the plot. The message more important than the story. The destination takes precedence over the journey. What they don’t understand is that when a child opens a book, it’s the journey he’s looking forward to. The ending has to be good, but getting there must be great.

Magical, unforgettable journeys aren’t always planned. Sometimes they occur by accident. If you have the heart and soul of a writer, this shouldn’t scare you. In fact, it’s exciting. If you’re open to working a long time on your protagonist, so you know this character inside and out and he has many facets to his personality, then at some point the protagonist takes over. He’ll show you where the story needs to go. If you’re comfortable with brainstorming and actually putting any idea that pops into your head down on paper without editing, you’ll make subconscious connections between ideas that you didn’t even know you had. And if you’re committed to story, not message, you could end up with a book that’s bigger than anything you ever imagined.

We often talk about the structure of fiction: a character who has a problem to solve, a catalyst that gets the plot moving, an ending that resolves the problem in a believable way. These techniques are still a vital part of writing, but don’t worry about them until you know exactly who your protagonist is and what that character needs. If you try to think of a catalyst before you know what your character wants, you can’t possibly put that character in a situation that drastically effects his life. Wander around and explore your options before you worry about your story’s foundation. Let yourself get lost before you find the perfect place to settle down.

What about nonfiction? Surely you need to know where you’re going when you’re writing factual material, right? In this case, you probably will know where you have to end up; what topic you’re going to explore, or what points you want to make. But how you get there is still up for grabs. Do you want to write about medieval life from a humorous perspective, with short bursts of information interspersed with jokes, trivia and quizzes? How about a day in the life of a 12-year-old peasant? Maybe a collection of recipes for everything from celebratory feasts to common dinners to medicinal concoctions? As you’re researching, keep an open mind. You may stumble across a gem that completely changes the direction of your book for the better. Or, you’ll amass so much material that you’ll have a book and five articles, all with a different focus.

One of the perks of writing for children is that your options are endless. Getting there is half the fun. As long as you’re open to infinite possibilities, you’ll never lose your way.

Before submitting your work, it’s essential that you dig deep into children’s book publishers‘ lists to find the best fit for your manuscript. Your first stop is Children’s Writer’s & Illustrator’s Market published by Writer’s Digest Books. Note which publishers do the type of book you’ve written (or are planning to write, and are also accepting submissions from new writers. Then send for a current catalog.

Let’s look at the picture books from two hypothetical publishers:

Publisher A:

Total picture books: 26.
Picture books by type: 8 talking animal stories; 4 concept books; 2 realistic stories; 2 humorous stories; 2 fantasy; 1 holiday book (Easter); 3 nonfiction (2 animal/nature, 1 religion); 4 poetry collections.
Age range of books: 6 for ages 2-5, 12 for ages 4-7, 6 for ages 6-10.
Types of authors: Established authors (two or more books published)–5; famous authors (significant name recognition/ awards)–11; reissues of classic books–5 (3 poetry collections); new authors–5.
Percent of list from new authors: just over 19%.

Publisher B:

Total picture books:14
By type: 4 talking animals; 1 concept book; 2 realistic stories; 3 humorous stories; 4 nonfiction (history, biography).
Age range of books: 3 for ages 3-6; 11 for ages 4-8 or 4-9.
Types of authors: Established authors– 7; famous authors–3; new authors– 4.
Percent of list from new authors: 28.5%

Suppose you have a picture book starring talking animal characters. Even though Publisher A has fewer new authors, it produces a greater percentage of talking animal stories. And you really want Publisher A to do your book. Should you submit? First, look at the authors in Publisher A’s stable. Over half are famous or authors of classic books (which means instant sales for the reissued editions). Plus, after checking out the bios of the authors in the catalog, you discover that 3 out of the 5 new authors are either celebrities or renowned illustrators writing their first books. Clearly, this publisher prefers authors with some name-recognition. Does this mean you shouldn’t submit here?

Not necessarily, but slide it down your list. Publisher B has a higher percentage of new authors (no celebrities and only one known illustrator), a good number of animal stories, and a greater number of humorous books. Since your talking animal story has ironic humor that is likely to appeal to older picture book readers (who make up the majority of this publisher’s audience), Publisher B looks like a good fit.

Other things we’ve learned: Publisher B prefers books about history and real people, as indicated by the nonfiction titles and the fact that both realistic fiction books are based on public figures (you’ll learn this by reading the plot descriptions). So your picture book fiction incorporating real events set at the turn of the century might appeal to these editors.

On the other hand, Publisher A has published a holiday book and a religious book, whereas Publisher B has neither. So a religious picture book might work best with Publisher A, unless the book is a biography of a religious leader.

Of course, analyzing publishers’ catalogs isn’t an exact science, but it can help increase your chances of finding a good match with an editor down the road.

Do you have an effective biography on your web site?
Because when people visit your web site, it is vital that you establish your credibility. As quickly and as convincingly as possible.

This can be done through testimonials, before-and-after pictures, seals (Better Business Bureau, Ethical Business Pledge, etc.) – but you can also add to your credibility by writing a short but informative biography books of who you are.

The important thing to remember here is that – just like with all areas of your web site – you should only include information in your short biography books that will help you sell your product or service.

Your biography should include:

1. Specific information about your background. In other words, what makes you qualified to sell your particular product or service?

2. Some information on any relevant education you have. Particularly if you’re in the medical or legal profession. Or one that requires certification, like the accounting profession.

3. Information about your hobbies – but only if it serves to make a connection with your readers. (For instance, I’m a huge fan of the San Francisco 49ers. So if I’m on a sporting goods site and the owner writes about the glory days of the 49ers, I’ll feel a personal connection with him that I wouldn’t feel with, say, a Dallas Cowboys fan.)

4. A pleasant, non-threatening photograph of yourself – so that your customers will know that you’re a real, breathing person. And, more importantly, that you’re a person they can trust.

When you’re done, read your biography out loud and take out any information that a) doesn’t pertain directly to the product or service you’re selling, b) makes you sound arrogant or boastful, or c) sounds like it was written by a second-grader.

Then have somebody neutral – meaning not your spouse, your boy- or girlfriend, or your mother – read your biography and give you their honest opinion.

If more than one person has a problem with a specific section of your biography, consider taking it out.
On Writing & Speaking – Does Bill’s “Passion” Belong in His Biography?

“Most of today’s books are read by women,” I was told by an editor at a mid-sized publishing company.

So, her firm pays special attention to packaging books in ways that will appeal to females. Publications appear in various eye-catching shapes and sizes and the cover art is generally very vivid and romantic.

The majority of authors who write for this company are also women, thus there is solid, financial logic in these marketing and packaging decisions.

If you pay attention to author biographies you’ll see frequent references to the writers’ “passion” for this and that, especially for “sharing” ideas.

These descriptors are also more likely to resonate with women.
Why, therefore would a man, who promotes himself as a professional public speaker and a trainer of other orators, insert these terms, and similar ones, into his biography?

He may have a good reason.

His buyers, the meeting planners and others who select speakers for special occasions, could also be women. In that case, he may be creating a sense of identification and rapport with those that are going to select and compensate him.

There’s nothing wrong with that tack. It’s sensible.
But if his audience is largely composed of tractor and earth moving equipment salesmen, or their manager, I doubt they’re going to be interested in watching Speaker Bill get in touch with his feminine side.

I bring this up because I was reading the biography of a fellow who sprinkled it with terms like “passion” and “sharing” and the like.

If he is hoping to find a receptive audience with men, he’s kidding himself.

We can learn from his example.

Check the biography you’re distributing for gender-bias. It may be unconsciously weighted in one direction or another, resulting in needless alienation of what could be a superior market for your topics, and for you as a writer or speaker.

If your best buyers are men, you don’t want to have a “passion” for seeming inappropriately emotional!

Tech Blog: http://tech.shantanugoel.com/ Secure Programming Blog: http://www.safercode.com/blog/ Blog: http://blog.shantanugoel.com/ -->
The Blog Catalog readers and authors have once again voted Global Domains International (GDI) best affiliate money making program on the internet simply for its ease of use and income potential.

1000’s of Real People in 180+ Countries are Earning Quiet Fortunes From Home
Using the Most Ingenious Automated Marketing System Ever Invented.
Did You Miss Out on the .COM Boom?

The first wave of the Internet opportunity explosion has come and gone. If you were in tune to the opportunities of the day in the late 1990’s AND you were very LUCKY, you likely would not be reading this right now. Instead, you would be resting comfortably “on the other side” as some call it. The place where the grass IS greener, or at least it would seem so, simply because you would have the financial independence, peace and the time to sit and watch it grow, if that were your desire.

Good news: The SECOND WAVE is now upon us! For a very LIMITED TIME, you may register for FREE with the world’s next big Internet giant, Global Domains International, Inc. (aka “GDI”), an Inc500 listed, debt free corporation and home of all .ws “Web Site” domain names (web addresses) worldwide.

500 Million Customers
A Multi-Billion Dollar Market

Currently there are around 60 million domain names registered globally. Industry experts are predicting that in the next ten years, more than 500 MILLION domain names and web sites will be active annually.

Imagine if YOU could get a piece of this multi-billion dollar per year global market, which will include ongoing annual domain renewals AND the web based services utilized with each domain name. Most of the good .com domains are already taken, but the .ws “Web Site” domain Registry (GDI) has an unbelievable amount of the very best names still available, and only GDI offers the opportunity for YOU to benefit from the enormous residual revenues being generated.

Even before launching the amazing “Income for Life“™ program in June of 2004, GDI achieved a five (5) year track record of incredible success and currently maintains customers with annual renewals and web services in more than 180 countries. Now it’s YOUR CHANCE to cash in on the huge demand for domain names and web services worldwide.
Unlimited Leads, Unlimited Income Potential

Every day, 100,000’s of people are looking for ways to make extra money. They voluntarily enter their names and contact information onto 1000’s of web sites around the world, hoping to find that one golden opportunity.

Once you invite everyone you personally know with the automated email invitation system or you give them your Movie.ws URL (such as www.My.ws/wscorp), you may decide to acquire a list of these opportunity seekers who are hungry to make money online. You will be given access to a virtually unlimited supply of these leads.

Are You Intrigued?

You should be! This is a real opportunity, a real Inc500 listed company and REAL PEOPLE WORLDWIDE are already making fantastic monthly incomes that will come to them month-after-month, year-after-year.

People in many countries across the globe are just now beginning to realize full time incomes with GDI that can grow each month. Are YOU going to pass this up without seeing and hearing what it’s all about?

buy php I normally like to be charitable, but this publication really has nothing to recommend it. Don’t touch it with a bargepole.

It’s a book about secure, object orientated PHP applications by a guy who doesn’t understand security, doesn’t understand OOP and can’t write.

Despite the title “Secure PHP”, there are whole classes of security exploits which are not even mentioned. There is no comprehensive and authoritative discussion of security at any point.

The code samples are poorly laid out, riddled with errors, littered with notes to the author from the technical reviewer, and astonishingly repetitive. You will often get large chunks of code repeated many times just to show changes in a couple of lines buried somewhere in the middle.

Not that the code is worth the effort of reading. The design is often naive, the organisation unclear and the coding practices poor.

For example, he uses a naming convention for constants ($MY_CONSTANT) rather than defining proper constants as provided for by the PHP language via define().

Another example: on page 41 he exhorts his readers to use good naming standards. Yet the abstract application class that forms the core of the book is full of method names such as: name() number() currency() show_status()… I could go on. There are dozens of other equally cryptic examples.

The copy editing and proofreading is the worst I have ever seen in a technical book: it is a disgrace to the profession. There is a grammatical error in the second sentence! Here is a sample of what you can expect, from the 3rd page:

“Next, you need to consider how user interfaces will be presented and how can you allow for maximum customization that can be done without changing your core code. This is typically done by introducing external HTML templates for interface.”

Even the section headings are ungrammatical: “Using relational database” (p21)

The 16 editors and proofreaders credited in the frontmatter should hang their heads in shame. This has severly damaged my confidence in Wiley as a brand – they clearly have no concept of quality control. I will be very wary of buying their products in future. The cover strapline “Timely. Practical. Reliable.” is a sick joke…

Only 20 pages of “secure development techniques”1
When I saw this book at the local bookstore (one of only 10 PHP related books in stock), I thought, “Awesome! I’ve been looking for some more securing applications techniques.” It turned out to be a big let down.

The book is roughtly 750 pages (large print), the first 50 or so was an introduction and gave a few bad examples vs. good examples of code (which was good, and actually made me think the rest of the book was going to be good), then jumped directly into “here’s 650 pages worth of class based applications for you to use”. The last 40-50 pages of the book was a chapter called something to the effect of “Optimizing and Securing PHP”. Of the whole book, this was the most dissapointing aspect, split equally between the 2 topics. I thought the whole book was going to be about writing secure PHP, not just 20 pages.

Even the sample code they gave was in my opinion, poor. The author encouraged a strong misuse of OOP, having every single script have its own class dedicated to it. For example, one of the 50 “ready to use applications” was for handling users for their intranet. They wrote a class with methods for updating the user’s information, adding a user, selecting the user’s email address from the database, etc. The goal of OOP is to be abstract so that it can be used in more than one area, something the author didn’t bother to learn before he wrote this book.

Even the optimizing portion of the last chapter was a big let down. It felt like there was really only one example of code optimization. The rest of the pages explained how to make a particular PEAR script do a speed test on your code. How is that supposed to help me if I’m not even certain how to write it more efficiently?

I’m not interested in a book that shovels me a bunch of code the author wrote. If I wanted free code, there’s tons of sites out there for that. I want a book that’s going to teach me how to think more securely and write more securely and think about the best/most optimized way to write a particular portion of code. Sadly, this book isn’t it.

Not a good book1
I read the first Chapter of this book and that was enough to know that this book is no good. The examples are not well explained and when it comes to try the code, it doesn’t work. Don’t waste your money on this!
It’s a hacker’s dream come true: over one million Web sites are now vulnerable to attack through recently discovered flaws in the PHP scripting language. So how do you protect your site? In this book, bestselling author Mohammed Kabir provides all the tools you’ll need to close this security gap. He presents a collection of 50 secure PHP applications that you can put to use immediately to solve a variety of practical problems. And he includes expert tips and techniques that show you how to write your own secure and efficient applications for your organization.

I’ve enjoyed some great reading over the past few months. Passchendaell, Divine Justice, The Good Old Boys, Night of Flames, Echo Burning and Telegraph Days.

	Telegraph Days by Larry McMurtry
One of McMurtry’s more entertaining efforts, much like his ‘Buffalo Gals’. I’ve found that some of his stories, even though they often contain humour can be very dark. The ‘Lonesome Dove’ series, for example can supply some serious depression. Yes, Telegraph Days has some depressing moments since it’s trying to depict life, after all, but overall it is a very funny, entertaining read. It follows the life of a young woman in the west from 1876 through the turn of the century and includes several historical references. Great read.

I enjoy novels that take a different look at what has become the accepted norm. For example, anyone who has read about WW II knows about the Polish being rolled over by the blitzkrieg tactics of the German Army. They would know about the Free Polish who, based in England, served with distinction in ending the occupation of their homeland. But very little is known about what happened to others who remained in Poland or escaped to other neighbouring countries during the next 6 years.
What happens to women married to rich men who mistreat them? Do they put up with it for the monetary freedom or do they simply disappear to another life?
Does anyone give a thought to how the telegraph changed everyone’s life during the mid 1800s? What were the subjects of most messages? Gossip or business?

More about the other three novels in the next post.
